A New Beginning in Life-Living in Lake Chapala

The reason why many people who retire talk about new beginnings is because after living a life of working for money, paying the mortgage, having a car, and accomplishing all the material standards of society, people discover that nobody knows who in the beginning said they had to do all these things, and, well, after living the fast life for many years, now comes the opportunity to retire, which means, stop working and… then what?

"Well, nothing, I am retired," answer some. And others answer, "What do you mean?" …well, I mean a new beginning in life!

Have you ever dreamed of doing something different? Have you ever dreamed of having time to dedicate yourself to something you wished you could do since you were a child? Were there any things you wanted to start, but never had time to finish? Did you ever, while working, think of all the things you could be doing if you were at home? Did you ever do something you enjoyed as a child and then didn't have time to do it anymore?

What about playing a musical instrument? Painting? Cooking! Learning how to quilt? Oh, I always wished I could sew like my grandmother used to! Learning about animals, plants, history, architecture, different cultures? You know what I used to dream? I used to dream I was Jacques Cousteau's daughter, and I still enjoy watching the documentaries and reading his books! Did you use to write poems when you were a teenager in love? Or maybe you wanted to learn to carve wood or stone like Michelangelo? Do you like music? Did you know you can play it on your computer and use your wide screen TV to watch the videos with surround sound? Do you remember how much you used to enjoy the chirping of the birds or the croaking of the frogs? Have you ever had a hummingbird feeder?

Well, I am sure that you have many more ideas… would you like to share them with your neighbors and friends? I met a couple w¬¬ho came on a Focus on Mexico program; they bought a house before the program started and stayed in Lake Chapala. After the program finished, one day I ran into them on the street and told them how worried I was about them needing something. They were in a rush because they had something to do. And every time I see them, they always have something to do. They sold their car shortly after moving here and each bought a scooter. She took up tennis lessons. They now have two MM dogs (Mexican Mutts). They have a myriad of friends they socialize with and they are enjoying life to the fullest.

So what do people learn after they retire? They learn that all you have to do is give it a try… yes, try the food and learn about what you are eating. Go back to basics and exercise or learn something new, something that appeals to your interest. Some people say that what they learned about their retirement was that they spent their life doing what they were supposed to do and never what they really, really, really wanted to do…

But living in Lake Chapala gives you the opportunity to start again, to begin a new life. To discover who you are and follow the lead of your dreams, and when you run out of dreams, make a new list. You can always be reborn and reinvent yourself.

There are many people who found their new life in Lake Chapala…found it through art, music, charities, sports, reading and writing clubs, cooking, and other activities that have enhanced their lives and turned them into something they didn't even imagine when they first made the choice to move here. Just ask the lady who appeared in a play for the first time in her life. Or our friend who has decorated her windows with her own stained glass creations. Or, another friend who had never painted in her life whose paintings are now capturing the beauty of Mexico as well as many fans. All of us have hundreds of stories like this.

Here you now have the time to meet new and exciting people who are interested in the things you are interested in. You just have to get out and make friends with them. These kind of people are here; you just have to be alert and ready for a new experience. They will give you new ideas and show you new ways to do what you are thinking about.

"I'll tell you, one thing is for sure. You are here right now! Do less lunches out and learn how to cook. Do less shopping and create something for yourself, even if you don't mean to sell it…" Gerry Krause – local artist who came from San Francisco in 2003 – says, "It is what you make it. You are you and it is all here."
